Trump May Visit China, No Plans for Xi Summit Yet

Trump says he is not looking for a meeting with xi jinpings but may travel to china. APEC talks and trade negotiations may shape the path forward.

On Tuesday, July 29, 2025, U.S. President Donald Trump said he is not actively pursuing a summit with the Chinese President Xi Jinping, though stated he would go to China in case he gets invited, an invitation he said already proffered.

I would like to visit China and that should be on an invitation from President Xi which is extendible. So say I to the other: No more interest!” On Truth Social, Trump wrote.

This does not preclude aides on both sides agreeing on a possibility of a meeting at the leader level when Trump visits Asia at the end of the year, sources said.

Should it occur, the visit would be the first face-to-face meeting of Trump and Xi since the latter part of Trump’s first term, and it would come at a time when the two countries remain in an irate stage of leading up to their tensions on trade and security issues.

There is the prospect of a Trump stopover when the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) summit is in South Korea or a side encounter at the Korean summit scheduled on October 30 to November 1.

In the meantime, U.S.-China trade talks are into their third round, which this week is being held in Stockholm, and may form part of a fall summit, analysts add.

Nevertheless, a new resurgence in tariffs or export restrictions can cause a big blow on summit chances.
