James Gunn: Replacing Cavill as Superman Was Unfair

James Gunn opens up about replacing Henry Cavill

James Gunn opens up about replacing Henry Cavill with David Corenswet as Superman, aiming to reshape the DC Universe with a fresh vision and honesty

After the frenzy which surrounded the release of the film, director James Gunn has recently discussed how he managed the sensitive switching of Henry Cavill with David Corenswet as the Man of Steel in the next film- Superman. The Cavill incident was not as sudden and personal as many believed, Gunn explained in an open appearance on the “Happy Sad Confused” podcast.

Speaking to Gunn, he revealed that by the time his signing at DC Studios was coming into form, the secret was already out that Cavill was coming back to the role of Superman. However, as Gunn said, this was an announcement made by a group of the studio attempting to get their own vision into the proceedings, which was never actually established or brought close to Gunn sportive vision.

To leave no doubts, Gunn decided to go the straightforward way: he personally contacted Cavill and explained to him the situation. In short, he added, Cavill was not fired, the new version of Superman just needed a clean break.

Although David Corenswet’s casting initially angered fans, this was only a small aspect of Gunn’s larger ambition to reshape the entire DC Universe to fit his own vision. Amidst the misunderstanding, the fact that Gunn is trying to be transparent with Cavill allows us to know that he is trying to do the right thing as far as honest storytelling is concerned.
