An initial MLA, Rekha defeated AAP candidate Bandana Kumari by 29,595 votes to win the Shalimar Bagh seat during the Delhi parliamentary elections. This victory ended the AAP’s ten-year dominance over the area.

In 1992, she began her political career at Delhi University’s Daulat Ram College with the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP). She worked on student problems while serving as President of the Delhi University Students’ Union (DUSU) from 1996 to 1997.

Following his election to the North Pitampura council in 2007, Gupta attempted to enhance local facilities such as swimming pools, parks, among libraries. She additionally established the “Sumedha Yojana” to help female students in colleges and universities who are less well off. She oversaw programs for women’s empowerment while serving as chair of the Women Welfare and Development of Children Committee.

In addition, Gupta was a member of the national executive committee of the BJP Mahila Morcha and its secretary-general in Delhi.

Rekha, 50 years old, was born in Nandgarh village, which is situated in the Jind district of Haryana, in 1974. His father was an officer at the State Bank of India. Although Rekha was just two years old in 1976, her entire family moved to Delhi. After completing her elementary school, she went on to Delhi for further study.

The AAP only won 22 of the total 70 assembly seats, while the Hindu National Congress (BJP) won 48. Prominent AAP leaders resigned their seats, notably previous deputy chief minister Manish Sisodia and former chief minister Arvind Kejriwal. Kejriwal, who has represented New Delhi for more than ten years, defeated to BJP candidate Parvesh Verma by 4,089 votes.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi praised the people of Delhi appreciate their backing and chastised the AAP’s management in addition to celebrating the BJP’s historic victory. An unambiguous mandate for growth and confidence over “ostentation, anarchy, and arrogance” was the outcome, according to him.

Atishi was able to hold onto her spot in Kalkaji, but several AAP leaders, notably Sisodia and Satyendra Jain, lost. Modi promised to make Delhi a great city for its citizens and to uphold standards of governance.

After 27 years, the BJP regained control of Delhi, dealing a serious setback to the AAP, which prevailed in the 2015 and 2020 elections.
